Career-Enhancing Class Consolidations

CAPS is working cooperatively with CalHR and the various departments that employ scientists to consolidate scientific classifications. CAPS' goal is to increase promotional opportunities, to increase lateral transfer opportunities, to expand classifications vertically to allow continued scientific work without the need to supervise others, and to promote career growth generally.

CAPS wants you to be able to evaluate these for yourself and to provide feedback to CAPS if you so desire.

Earth Scientist Series - CAPS Proposal (12/04/12)

The classifications proposed to be folded in to the Earth Scientist series are as follows:  Geologist, Seismologist, Oceanographer, Meteorologist, Petroleum Geologist, Geophysicist, and  Geochemist.  It may also be appropriate for some or all Land and Water Use Scientists to be moved into this new series.  This class specification would provide career growth for members, and recognition to those scientists working at a higher level.

Environmental Scientist - CAPS Proposal (10/16/12)

The classifications proposed to be folded in to the ES series are as follows:  Land and Water Use Scientists, Hazardous Substances Scientists, and  Integrated Waste Management Specialists.  The new draft classification also adds a rank-and-file scientist level above the Staff ES level.  This would provide career growth for members, and recognition to those scientists working at a higher level.  CAPS will also seek to roll a few other low population classifications into the ES series.
